Ownership inscription to the title page, with minor inscriptions to the odd leaf, some dated 1910. Minor closed tear to p.12 vol. IX. Minor damp staining to the upper right corner of the rear leaves of vol. XIV. Internally, the binding is generally firm, with slightly strained hinges which are holding firm. With a minor faint spotting to the fore edge, affecting particularly the first and last few leaves. Otherwise, the pages are generally bright and clean throughout. The Home Tidings of the Polytechnic Young Men&Apos;S Christian Institute Volume VI

London, Polytechnic Young Men's Christian Institute, 1885. Leather. This interesting and very scarce book contains a collection of the monthly issues of The Home Tidings, a monthly publication from the Polytechnic Young Men's Christian Institute. The publications include short stories, letters to the editor, sports fixtur The Polytechnic in Regent Street was established by a missionary worker, Quintin Hogg, who had previously run a Young Men's Christian Institute in the Covent Garden. Hogg envisaged the Polytechnic as a "spiritual, social, educational and athletic" environment for young men otherwise without homes or support in the city. They could room there while attending classes and activities. A day school was opened on the premises in 1886, and this continues today as the Quintin Kynaston Secondary School in St John's Wood, London. (British Library) In a half-Morocco binding. Two of the volumes detail the collection of Erich von Goldschmidt-Rothschild (1899-1987), of the famous Rothschild lineage. In the volume detailing Castiglioni's collection Otto von Falke (1862-1942) has contributed. The binding is tight and firm. There is some wear to the extremities including some discolouration to the spine panels and bumping with some loss.
